HomeySpec’s buying guides and reviews are built on a consistent research process. This page explains exactly how we evaluate and compare the products we write about.
Our Review Process
1. Category Research
Before comparing individual products, we research the category itself — what features actually matter, what terminology means, and what separates a good option from a poor one in that space. For example, for refrigerators, this means understanding capacity classes, ENERGY STAR ratings, and defrost types before we ever compare specific models.
2. Product Shortlisting
We identify a shortlist of products worth evaluating based on:
- Popularity and availability from major retailers
- Relevance to the specific use case covered by the guide (e.g., “small kitchens,” “large families,” “budget buyers”)
- Presence of verifiable specifications from manufacturers or certification bodies
3. Specification Analysis
For each product, we gather and compare specifications from primary sources wherever possible, including:
- Manufacturer product pages and spec sheets
- Government and independent certification databases (such as ENERGY STAR)
- Retailer listings for pricing and availability
- Published third-party test data and user feedback, where available
4. Comparative Evaluation
We compare shortlisted products against each other on the factors that matter most for the specific guide’s purpose — this might be energy use and footprint for a small-kitchen refrigerator guide, or noise level and filtration for an air purifier guide. We highlight trade-offs rather than declaring a single “best” product for every reader.
5. Writing and Editorial Review
Our content is written to reflect the research findings as accurately as possible, avoiding overstated claims. Where data is uncertain, estimated, or sourced from a single reference, we aim to reflect that appropriately rather than presenting it as definitive.
What We Do Not Do
- We do not accept payment in exchange for a positive review or a specific product ranking.
- We do not allow brands to pre-approve or edit our conclusions.
- We do not fabricate test results or specifications we have not verified.
A Note on Hands-On Testing
Not every product featured on HomeySpec has been physically tested in-house. Many of our guides are built from rigorous desk research — aggregating manufacturer data, certification records, and third-party test results — rather than hands-on use. Where a guide is based on this kind of research rather than direct hands-on testing, we aim for that to be clear from the content itself. As HomeySpec grows, we intend to expand hands-on testing across more categories.
Updates to Reviews
Products, prices, and specifications change. We periodically revisit and update our guides to keep them current, and we welcome corrections from readers — see our Corrections Policy.
